St. Moritz – Chantarella – Corviglia funicular railways

Major overhaul in summer 2026

After around 40 years of continuous operation of the funicular railways and given the long service life of the historic facilities, a comprehensive overhaul is necessary to ensure that they continue to operate safely, reliably and in line with modern standards.

Accessibility of Corviglia in summer 2026

To ensure that Corviglia and St. Moritz’s local mountain – Piz Nair – remain accessible to our guests despite the restrictions, Engadin St. Moritz Mountains is providing alternative options. A shuttle bus for pedestrians will operate between the Signal mountain station and the Piz Nair valley station, and the Alp Giop chairlift will be open this summer exclusively for pedestrians and bikers.
Corviglia and Piz Nair can therefore be reached via the following transport options:

Live-Status

All biking facilities, flow trails and hiking trails remain accessible. Thanks to these comprehensive replacement and additional services, the full summer programme on Corviglia and Piz Nair is available to all guest groups – hikers, families, bikers and day visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions About the 2026 Major Overhaul

Here, we answer the most important questions about the major overhaul in the summer of 2026.

To ensure that Corviglia and St. Moritz’s local mountain—Piz Nair—remain accessible to you as a destination despite the restrictions, we are offering alternatives. A shuttle bus for pedestrians will be set up between Signal Berg and Piz Nair Tal, and the Alp Giop chairlift will be in operation this summer exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists.
Corviglia and Piz Nair can therefore be reached via the following transportation options:

  • St. Moritz Bad – Signal cable car as the main feeder service
  • Shuttle bus for pedestrians (without bike transport) between the Signal cable car mountain station and the Piz Nair valley station
  • Alp Giop chairlift (including bike transport), which will be put into operation on a one-off basis in summer 2026 to take mountain bikers and hikers to Munt da San Murezzan
  • Celerina – Marguns gondola lift with onward travel via the Marguns – Corviglia chairlift

Pedestrians are also transported downhill, with a maximum of 2 people per chair. Bicycles are transported downhill on the lift only in emergencies.

Operation is weather-dependent. In case of unfavorable weather conditions, particularly if there is a risk of thunderstorms or strong winds, the lift may be closed early or for the entire day. Operating hours are adjusted according to current weather conditions.

Bikes are transported downhill on the lift only in emergencies. (The road from Marguns to Celerina should be manageable for any trail biker.)

Bikes are transported downhill on the lift only in emergencies.

Yes, the prices for Alp Giop are the same as those for Corviglia (Zone 2’500 day pass).

Yes, you can purchase a Zone 1 ticket (up to 2,300 m), a Zone 2 ticket (up to 2,500 m) to Corviglia, or a Zone 3 ticket (up to 3,000 m) to Piz Nair at the Signal mountain station.

Ticket vending machines are available at both the Signal mountain station and the Piz Nair valley station. These allow you to purchase all available tickets directly on site.

The shuttle service between the Signal mountain station and the Piz Nair valley station does not have a fixed schedule and operates on an as-needed basis. It runs from 8:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (subject to change).

The shuttle’s schedule is coordinated with the arrival and departure times of the Signal and Piz Nair cable cars.

The shuttle does not operate in snow or during snowfall.

Since the buses do not have a fixed schedule, they operate—whenever possible—as a direct connection to the cable cars or as needed.

Each bus can accommodate seven to eight passengers. During peak hours, several buses are on standby at the stops so that we can keep wait times as short as possible.

Dogs are permitted, but—in accordance with standard rail regulations—they must have a valid ticket if their shoulder height is 30 cm or higher.

Strollers up to a certain size can be easily stored in the trunk of the shuttle bus.

No, all biking trails, flow trails, and hiking trails remain accessible. However, after the descent from the Olympia Flow Trail, a short, signposted climb to the Signal Bahn mountain station or the descent via the trail to St. Moritz-Bad to the Signal Bahn valley station is required.

The shuttle buses we use are similar to the ones we use to transport our employees up the mountain. In most cases, these are comfortable VW Type T buses.

Of course, we also transport individual guests and make sure that the wait time for each guest is as short as possible. For larger groups, we generally provide enough consecutive buses so that everyone can travel together. However, the number of buses may vary depending on availability.

For groups of ten or more without a reservation, we recommend traveling via Celerina. Take the Marguns gondola to Marguns, then continue on the Marguns–Corviglia chairlift. Once at Corviglia, follow the signs to the valley station of the Piz Nair cable car, which will take you comfortably to the summit.
For the return trip, we also recommend the Piz Nair–Corviglia–Marguns–Celerina route for groups of ten or more, as this route offers the most pleasant and efficient way to travel to and from the summit, especially for larger groups.

For groups of 15 or more people, we ask that you notify us at least 3 days in advance via email at infomountains.ch with the exact number of people, your planned arrival time at the Signal valley station, and—if already known—your planned departure time for the descent from the Piz Nair valley station.

This allows us to plan shuttle operations optimally, avoid long wait times, and ensure that your group can stay together.

Yes, if you’d prefer not to take the shuttle bus or the Alp Giop chairlift followed by a short hike from Munt da San Murezzan, we recommend traveling via Celerina. Take the Marguns gondola and then transfer to the Marguns–Corviglia chairlift. This way, you can reach Corviglia comfortably, without any waiting times and without an additional hike.

You can take the Signal Bahn and then the Alp Giop chairlift to Munt da San Murezzan. From there, it takes about 30 to 40 minutes on foot along the well-maintained hiking trail, past Lej Nair Pitschen, to reach Corviglia. For the return trip from Corviglia to the Alp Giop chairlift mountain station at Munt da San Murezzan, you should allow about 50 to 60 minutes of walking time.

Operational Information

The St. Moritz-Dorf – Chantarella – Corviglia funiculars will not be in operation this summer. You can reach St. Moritz’s local mountain, Piz Nair, via the Signal Bahn, the shuttle bus, and the Piz Nair cable car. Thank you for your understanding.
